So what Is Answer Engine Research?
Answer Engine Research is not keyword research. It is not volume chasing. It is not a spreadsheet of terms ranked by monthly searches.
Answer Engine Research is the practice of mapping the current conversation. What is being said, what is being asked, and critically, what is missing. It is the intelligence layer that sits beneath every content decision we make at Rygo Labs.
In GEO, we don’t follow the data. We make it.
Before we go further, the philosophical distinction matters.
The industry talks about Generative Engine Optimization — reacting to what the machine rewards, producing more of what already ranks. It is a follower’s game by definition.

Why Keyword Research isn't enough
Keyword research was built for a different machine. One that matched strings of text to strings of text. One that rewarded volume, density, and repetition.

How Answer Engine Research Works: The Full System
AER is not a one-time task. It is a continuous practice built in two directions simultaneously — analog intelligence gathering and digital competitive mapping. Here is the full methodology as we practice it at Rygo Labs.
Phase 1: Gather Intelligence From the Analog
Before we open a browser, before we look at a competitor, before we write a single word — we talk to people.
This is where the ONION Framework lives. We interview the business. The sales staff. The product designers. The customers. The people adjacent to customers who see how decisions actually get made in the real world.
We record. We transcribe. We look for the delta — the gap between what already exists in the training data and what only exists in the heads of practitioners who are doing the actual work.

Phase 2: Map Your Strategy and Information Architecture
With analog intelligence in hand, you map the structure before you build anything.
Your website is not a brochure. It is a database — for the machine and for the customer simultaneously. Every page has a job. Every header is a query. Every section is an answer to a real problem.

Map your pages before you write them. Each page needs:
– A primary H1 tied to a clear intent, query, or real problem
– Supporting H2s that resolve the emotional and practical dimension of that H1
– A brief that connects the page back to the site structure and semantic hierarchy
– A clear understanding of who is asking, why they are asking, and what decision they need to make
Be creative here. A page can be a resource. A guide. A comparison. A deep investigation. A practitioner’s account. The format should serve the customer and the machine — not a template.
Phase 3: Run Answer Engine Research on Each Page
This is the core of the methodology. This is where AER diverges completely from keyword research.
For every page you are building or optimizing, do the following:
Run a competitive analysis on the top pages for your H1. Read them. Map every H2 they use. Understand what they are saying and how they are saying it.
Then look for what they are not saying. What questions go unresolved? What angles are missing? What does a real practitioner know that these pages don’t show? Where is the conversation incomplete?
Map all H2s to relevant prompts and queries. Not just how a professional would search — how a layman asks. How someone on the outside with no industry knowledge phrases the problem. How someone in a moment of stress or confusion types into a search bar or speaks into a voice interface.
Use natural language. Use the strange variations. Use the emotional language behind the technical question.
Be recursive. Find new angles and frames. Approach the same core problem from different perspectives. Give the searcher multiple entry points into the same resolution.
This is not keyword cannibalization — in GEO it is called Recursive Perspective, and it is how you demonstrate mastery rather than surface-level coverage. It mimics the mental oscillation of the customer journey in the messy middle.
Map to intent, not volume. Every H2 is an opportunity. Not just to answer a question — but to orient a decision. Some H2s lead toward contacting you. Some enforce a purchase. Some appropriately deter the wrong customer. The point is usefulness. How useful can you actually be?
Consider the emotion behind the H1. What is the real problem? What is the person feeling when they type this query? Every H2 needs to resolve that emotional and practical tension — not just satisfy a search engine.
Phase 4: Build the Ongoing System
AER is not a launch deliverable. It is a living practice.
Every page you publish creates new competitive data. Every interview surfaces new information gain. Every shift in the landscape — a new AI feature, a competitor’s new content, a client’s new product — creates new gaps to fill and new angles to claim.
Regular intervals for:
– Ongoing interviews with practitioners, customers, and partners
– Competitive analysis refreshes for your primary terms and H1s
– Brief updates tied back to site structure and semantic hierarchy
– New support blogs and deep dives spawned from H2 opportunities identified in existing pages
The system compounds. Each piece of content you publish through AER makes the next piece more informed, more differentiated, and more authoritative.
AER vs. Current Research Practices: An Honest Comparison
We are not dismissing what came before. The research practices that built the SEO industry contain real value. AER does not replace all of them — it sits above them. It is the system that decides how to use each one and adds the layer none of them can access on their own.

Studying what ranks. Reading the top pages. Mapping structure, H2s, word count, internal linking.
What it does well: Clear picture of the competitive landscape. Reveals what the machine currently trusts.
Where it stops: A follower’s strategy by definition. You are studying what already won. AER uses competitor analysis as a starting point — specifically to identify the gaps. What did every top page miss? That gap is where AER begins, not where research ends.
SERP Feature Analysis
Studying featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, AI Overviews, knowledge panels. Understanding which features appear for which queries and what content format earns them.
What it does well: Reveals how the machine is currently surfacing answers. Useful for structuring content that earns rich results.
Where it stops: A formatting and structure insight, not a content insight. Format without genuine information gain is a short-term win. The machine is getting better at evaluating substance, not just structure.
People Also Ask and Forum Research
Mining PAA boxes, Reddit, Quora, and community forums for real questions in natural language.
What it does well: Gets closer to natural language. Surfaces emotional and situational language behind a query.
Where it stops: Still extracting from what already exists publicly. Forums capture questions people were willing to type online. AER surfaces what never made it to a forum because the practitioner didn’t know it was worth asking.
Zero-Click Research
Studying queries that get answered directly in search without driving a click. Understanding what the machine resolves itself versus what it defers to a source.
What it does well: Shows where the machine is already confident and where it still needs a source. The gaps — queries where the machine hedges — are where authority can insert itself.
Where it stops: Most practitioners respond to zero-click by chasing the snippet or grieving the lost traffic. AER uses zero-click analysis to find adjacent queries the machine cannot yet resolve confidently and builds the content that becomes the source it cites when it gets there.
Voice Search and Conversational Query Research
Mapping how people ask questions verbally — longer, more natural, more contextual than typed queries.
What it does well: Gets closer to natural human language. Forces you to think in complete questions rather than fragmented keyword strings.
Where it stops: Still mapping the surface — how the question is asked — rather than the depth of what a complete answer requires. AER uses this as an input to intent mapping and goes further — into the real-world knowledge required to answer in a way no AI could generate on its own.
Prompt Research
Studying how people prompt AI systems — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini. Building content designed to answer the way people prompt.
What it does well: Forward-looking. Acknowledges the query surface is shifting from search bars to conversational AI interfaces.
Where it stops: Still reactive. You are studying existing prompts and formatting answers to match them. AER starts before the prompt — in the real conversation with the practitioner who has knowledge that no prompt has ever surfaced because it was never in the training data.
Chunking: Formatting Tactic vs. Decision Architecture
The industry has embraced chunking — breaking content into short, scannable, AI-parseable segments.
What it does well: Makes content machine-readable. Helps language models extract and surface content in overviews.
Where it stops: Chunking as a formatting tactic asks *can the machine read this?* AER asks *does each chunk resolve tension and orient the next decision?* A chunk that is scannable but resolves nothing is shorter clutter. We structure chunks as decision nodes — each one answering a question, then creating the conditions for the next question to surface naturally.
Query Fanning: Volume Play vs. Machine Journey Mapping
Mapping one core topic to multiple related query variations to capture a wider surface area of search.
What it does well: Broader coverage. More entry points into the same topic.
Where it stops: The industry uses it for volume. AER uses query fanning to map the Machine Journey — not how many ways can people search this topic, but where is this person in their understanding and what question does that position produce?

E-E-A-T Evaluation
Google’s framework for assessing Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness.
What it does well: Structured lens for evaluating content quality signals. Experience — the first E — is the most important and hardest to fake.
Where it stops: E-E-A-T is an evaluation framework, not a research methodology. It tells you what signals to aim for. It does not tell you how to generate the experience signal. AER is the methodology that produces genuine E-E-A-T proof — by going to real practitioners, capturing real experience, and publishing field-sourced insight that no amount of content optimization can simulate.
Where AER Sits
